Show Switch - Ask the Audience

I think I've mentioned before that we bought season tickets to the Fox last summer as an anniversary present for each other, mostly because we wanted first dibs at the Hamilton tickets when the show comes to St. Louis in the 2017-18 season (April of 2018!!!). I'm a Hamilton nut, as evidenced by the fact that my two year old can sing along to the soundtrack (questionably appropriate language at times, but worth it for the history lesson, I say). We've enjoyed all the shows this year--David's favorite was Once and my favorite was Cabaret. It's been a great way to get in a monthly date night and have an excuse to dress up.

David's school is taking a group of students to see The Lion King this April, so we bought discounted group tickets so that Zuzu and I can go along, and I'm really looking forward to taking her for the first time. She's a little young for an evening show, but I think a matinee with a group of elementary school students will be her jam. I've seen Lion King before and I think she will love it--I need to remember to show her the movie before we go.

Anyway, I haven't seen any of the shows that are in the upcoming regular season. We also have the opportunity to switch out one show from our regular package to something that's not in our series. Sound of Music is coming one weekend in February, and I know I want to take Zuzu to that show. My question is, since I'm not familiar with any of these, which show do I trade in for it?

The King and I

The Bodyguard

Get On Your Feet (I danced to this Gloria Esteban song in sixth grade, so it's possible they may want me to join the show.)

School of Rock

The Color Purple

So... which one of those should we NOT see? Which one would you switch out for Sound of Music?

  1. The Color Purple is phenomenal so that would get my vote.

    1. I think my request was unclear... I need to know which show NOT to see, so that we can see the Sound of Music. Now you have me wanting to see The Color Purple!

  2. I would switch out the King and I - I just saw it this season in Los Angeles (also part of a season package) and thought that the story was jingoistic and has not aged well. Just my $.02! :)

    1. That's helpful, thanks! I said to David when I saw the listing, "Isn't that one supposed to be kind of racist?" So probably that would be a good one to skip.

  3. If you won't partake of The King and I due to racist undertones, that makes it easy, The Bodyguard. Celebrating the life of a drug addict ;) ok, tongue in cheek there, but so many musicals have terrible "messages" Grease?? Good old licentious Rizzo. We're so politically correct today and although I'm not a proponent of racism, good luck finding a show that doesn't portray one of the "isms"

  4. We got our renewal yesterday. I think Sound of Music would be a lot of fun. The girls love the movie.

One thing I liked about doing season tickets at the Muny and the Fox for the first time this year was that it exposed me to all sorts of new shows. The people sitting behind us this season at the Fox always had these animated conversations about shows they walked out on or wished they had walked out on (Fun Home) or didn't even bother to come to because of the material, but that seems to defeat the purpose of exposure to the arts. Not equating that with you - I get the plan of swapping shows out for ones you really want to see. (Plus, it's your money.) I could also see not watching a show you've already seen - I'm fine not seeing the Lion King again. Cool once, not interested beyond that. But it's so hard to pick a show to eliminate when you don't know which one will have that moment in it where you realize that THIS is why you love the arts. I found that moment in each show this season - some were big moments, others were little ones.

NO advanced sales on extra tickets for Hamilton until they go on sale to general public. That should be interesting! We have to snag two more, was hoping for an early run at them.

    1. Oh, I completely agree! I might hesitate to spend money on a show I didn't already know about or really want to see, but when it's part of a package, you can go and end up loving it or hating it but at least having had an experience to talk about later. This is why I'm outsourcing opinions for the swap--because I'm not familiar with many of these. And I probably wouldn't want to swap out more than one show. Budget considerations are convincing me to make a trade rather than pay for Sound of Music out of pocket.

We were going to buy two extra tickets for Hamilton as well! I thought we'd get them for my parents... David thought we'd sell them and pay for our whole season (haha). Now I think we'll just stick with the two we get and avoid the madness. I hope you get yours!

    2. Me too - otherwise I'll give mine up for E and M to see it. They were the initial lovers. (And then we'll get more tickets in Chicago to see it! $$) I am feeling pretty good that the entire season tix are less than the average cost of good seats to see just Hamilton in NY or Chicago!

I'm not sure what I would swap. The Bodyguard seems like the choice for me, but then again, I adored Whitney Houston, and she was the first person I saw in concert. I think the music would be fun, but I really know nothing about the show.
